a) 提供流动性
外汇价格和货币对的波动是由约1/1000小数位来衡量的。如此细微的波动需要大量资金才能将其变成合理利润。一个标准手交易就要求$100,000的资本投入。这样的资金量才能提供足够的流动性让市场活跃起来，但很多交易者无法承担这样的资金。做市商的作用就是填补这个流动性的缺口，使得零售交易者也能进行外汇交易。做市商从提供报价的主要银行买入仓位，将其分成零售交易者能够承担的更小份额，这样就使得处于市场零售端的数百万交易者也能参与外汇交易。
b) 撮合交易
外汇交易的下单过程就是一场零和游戏，这意味着卖家和买家配对，反之亦然。做市商在市场上寻找特定数量货币对的买家和卖家，然后将特定货币特定数量的买入订单和同种货币同等数量的卖出订单配对。然而有些时候，很难找到完全匹配的交易者买卖订单。这时做市商可以介入，作为最终手段充当买家或卖家。以这种方式，做市商作为交易的对手方，从交易者那里买入卖出订单，或者向交易者卖出资产来匹配他的买入订单，通过交易台在几毫秒内完成订单交易。
换而言之，做市商实现市场交易，由此排除交易者在完成交易订单时任何可能的延迟。
c) 稳定点差
如果缺少了做市商在维持流动性过程中稳定点差的影响力，会很难保持较低和固定的点差。在ECN交易中，因为交易者完全暴露在市场实时供需变化中，点差的大幅浮动再正常不过，一秒钟就可从低至2个点跳到高至15个点。
但是，因为做市商承担这些市场暴露风险，为交易者固定价格，点差就保持在低位并固定不变，为零售交易者进行交易节省成本。另外，这也为零售交易者提供更好的入场点位。

做市商对于任何金融市场的运作都有至关重要的作用。缺少它们，金融市场将在缺乏流动性时受到不良打击，交易者将不能进行小额交易也不可能获得资产的最低点差。
