今年2月起印度“毫无征兆地”进入第二波疫情，确诊病例激增、医疗物资全线告急、医疗体系几近崩溃的同时，也折射出社会的“道德危机”——“疫情骗子”大量出现。
《纽约时报》16日报道称，当医用氧气成为紧俏的医疗物资时，有人在这方面动起了歪脑筋，“使绝望的印度沦为骗子的‘猎物’”。
报道称，印度当地一个慈善组织日前发现一起黑心事件，一家名为Varsha Engineering的“供应商”以高于市价一倍的价格——每瓶近200美元兜售氧气瓶。该组织随后愤而报警。印度警方在调查后发现，所谓供应商其实是一个废品回收站，他们把灭火器重新喷漆后作为氧气瓶来售卖。而这可能仅仅是印度当前疫情之下各种光怪陆离的欺诈乱象的一角。
警方表示，“这样做的结果可能是致命的”，因为不够结实的灭火器可能在进行氧气充填时不耐高压而发生爆炸。服务于该慈善组织的志愿者卡纳说：“这些人应该被控故意杀人罪，他们在拿人的生命开玩笑”。目前这家黑心“供应商”的负责人已被捕入狱。
报道称，仅在过去的一个月中，印度德里警方就已逮捕了210余名涉嫌在疫情期间参与诈骗、非法囤积的犯罪嫌疑人。北方邦近期也陆续逮捕了约160人，其罪名更是五花八门、令人啼笑皆非：一名小偷从死者身上偷走寿衣当作新衣服卖钱；有人贩卖假冒的瑞德西韦（在印度被用于治疗新冠肺炎，但世卫组织等对该药的有效性存疑）。古吉拉特邦警方甚至在半个月内缴获了数千瓶假冒的瑞德西韦。当犯罪嫌疑人带警方来到制造“瑞德西韦”的小作坊时，大家看到的是3371个装满葡萄糖和盐水的小瓶。坐地起价、哄抬物价、倒卖床位、非法卖血等乱象更是屡见不鲜。
曾在北方邦担任警察局长的辛格对此表示说，“我见识过各种掠夺和邪恶，但这种级别的，在我36年职业生涯中还没看见过”。德里最高法院本月也曾警告，“因为疫情难控，社会道德结构正在被肢解”。
